Runes, like gems and jewels, are items that you can insert into the sockets of weapons and armor to add benefits (a.k.a socketing). These benefits change if the rune is added to armor, shields or weapons. There are 33 runes in total - a list of them can be found at the bottom of this page. The combination of runes socketed in a specific order will result in the creation of a "Runeword", which we'll get into later.
As an added quality of life feature in Reimagined, runes have been changed to drop as 'stacks'. This makes storing lots of them easier.
You can identify a stack by the little green + symbol in the top-left of the item's icon. The number in the top-right indicates the rune's number.
Rune stacks have tooltips that tell you what you can do with stacks (stacking, unstacking, upgrading and downgrading). In order to use a rune you need to ‘unstack’ it first by transmuting the stack in the Horadric Cube.
As runes drop as stacks they will auto-stack in your inventory. You can also click/drag them on top of each other in your inventory or personal stash. The shared stash is hardcoded to not allow combining of items, so you must first remove items from it to stack them.
If you have an unstacked rune, simply transmute it with a rune stack of the same type in the Horadric Cube to merge them.
To unstack a rune, put the stack in the Horadric Cube and press transmute.
- Transmuting a stack with a quantity of 1 will convert it to a single, useable rune.
- Transmuting a stack with a quantity greater than 1 will create a single, useable rune and reduce quantity of the stack by 1.
Upgrading runes requires 2 runes of the same tier to create 1 rune of the next tier up.
Upgrading can be done in two ways:
1) Transmute two unstacked runes and a Tome of Town Portal in the Horadric Cube.
2) Transmute a stack (quantity must be 2 or more) and a Tome of Town Portal in the Horadric Cube. This will generate a single, unstacked rune of the next tier up, and reduces quantity of the stack by two.
Downgrading a rune yields only one rune of a tier lower.
Downgrading can be done in two ways:
1) Transmute an unstacked rune and a Tome of Identification in the Horadric Cube.
2) Transmute a stack (quantity must be 1 or more) and a Tome of Identification in the Horadric Cube. This will generate a single, unstacked rune of the tier lower, and reduces quantity of the stack by one.
Runes can drop from any monster in the game, but are especially common from the following Super Unique Monsters. You can read more information about rune drop tables and how they are affected by player count on MaxRoll.
Socketing runes into a non-magical item (a.k.a white 'base item') in a specific order results in a powerful item known as a Runeword. In addition to granting the benefits of the runes themselves, additional stats and modifiers are added that help empower your character's spells and abilities, or grant you new ones.
Runewords require that runes be added in a specific order, with the exact number of sockets required, into an appropriate base item.
For a list of all the Runewords in D2R-Reimagined, visit the mod website's Runewords tab, or the Wiki Runewords page.
